The rotator cuff is a tendon made up of four muscles that keep the shoulder stabilized. It stabilizes the ball of the shoulder within the joint and aids in lifting and the rotation of the arm.


It's not very difficult to tear the rotator cuff. Repetitive motions over a long period of time can cause wear and tear and eventually break down the tendon. Another common cause are isolated falls. When falling, individuals often reach out to prevent themselves from getting hurt. The force of the fall is enough to cause a tear and you normally experience a sharp or severe pain, a popping feeling, and your arm suddenly loses all of its strength. A common cause for individuals over 40 years old is impingement. The shoulder blade puts pressure on the rotator cuff when the arm is lifted and can result in a tear.
