The traditional water softener method uses a couple different softeners.
The two most common ones are sodium chloride and potassium chloride water softeners. Hard water has dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonate in it which causes scale. The traditional water softener method replaces the calcium and magnesium carbonate in the water with sodium or potassium chloride making it soft. This method can be effective. However, even though scale has been reduced, the salt in the water can corrode your galvanized pipes and water heater. And people often complain that the salt softened water feels slimy or slippery.
