Cast Iron Tortilla Press

Great information on the cast iron tortilla press.

In the old days before the cast iron tortilla press, corn tortillas were made by flattening out balls of fresh dough between your hands.  Someone that was skilled at tortilla making could use their hands to flatten out and make perfectly round and thin tortillas.  One other method was to use a banana leaf and flatten the dough on it.  By using one hand to pat the dough and the other to turn the banana leaf, it was possible to make a nice round tortilla.  Now it is possible to simply put a small ball of dough in the cast iron tortilla press, and then push down, making perfect thin and round tortillas every time.

How to use the cast iron tortilla press.

1. Form the masa, or tortilla dough, into small, ping pong or golf ball sized balls.

2. Place a masa ball in the middle of the cast iron tortilla press.

3. Press down the handle.

Using the cast iron tortilla press is actually very simple.

And that’s it.  You have now made fresh tortillas that are perfectly round and flat.
